Creating a Sacred Space

Creating a Sacred Space

There is something so amazing about creating special spaces and moments for the everyday things in life. I’ve always been known for making something special out of the ordinary and sometimes mundane and I love it! It fills me with joy and makes my spirit soar.  I always say, it’s the little things in life that can offer up so much joy and love when we “tend” to them.

I’m not saying at all that our yoga practice is ordinary or mundane, but in all honesty, it can become that over time and it’s good to spice things up.  Even putting that aside,

... creating a space that is special, meditative, and … well… scared can take your practice to new heights. And, it can help with consistency.  If you have a beautiful space set up, (it doesn’t have to be anything grand), it will call you! Every time you walk by, your space will woo you in! Don’t you love the idea of that?!

You might be like me where your practice space is small and can’t always keep it set up the way you like for your practices. That’s ok.  Have a couple of quick things you can grab to set in your space during your practice time and then put them away when you’re done like candles, essential oil diffusers, and a way to play music (more about that in a few).  Those are my personal go to’s! You could add items from whatever your religious faith is whether it’s statues or pictures of Jesus, Buddah, etc.  Some people even have alters in their practice space.  It’s always nice to have a plant, a rock garden or anything earthy that is grounding. I seem to be attracted to white twinkle lights whether they’re on the floor around the baseboard, draped over a window, wall or ceiling.  I will probably be incorporating that into my space one of these days.  And, of course, have your mat and props readily available.

The point is to use items that mean something to you and that help put you in a beautiful “zen” place, things that speak to you or touch your heart.  Music is a powerful tool in this arena. Nothing does it for me more than soft, quiet, meditative music. Sometimes I feel there is something in my spirit and the right music puts me in a place to receive whatever it is.  Sometimes I don’t even know that there is something there.  I just happen to put the music on, step onto my mat, and BOOM! I’m feeling so much! Receiving so much! Crying and releasing.  It’s amazing!!

I have a couple of channels on Pandora that I use depending on the mood, need, or desire in the moment.  My favorite is “Spirit Of Reiki Radio”.  I also use “Yoga Sanctuary Radio” and one that I have not used in a long time is “Spa Suite Radio”.  Music is an amazing addition to our practice.  Don’t shy away from fun music as well.  Sometimes after my flow and meditation,  I will put on fun spunky music especially when I have something hard to tackle.  Next thing ya know, I’m dancing and caring on and feeling strong and high on life!

So, if you have a big space that you can designate as your sacred yoga space, great!  But if you have a small space work with it and turn it into a dynamic sacred space for the time that you are using it.  Either way, bless it and enjoy your beautiful sacred space!
