Spring Cleaning with Yoga Part 1

Spring is finally here!  At least it is in my part of the world and for that, I give it a big ole happy dancin’ YAY!! The temps are warmer, the birds are singing, and things are beginning to bloom with the sunshine and spring showers.  It’s lovely!

With spring, though, comes spring cleaning.  We typically only think in terms of our homes, but spring is also a great time to “spring clean” or cleanse our bodies with special diets and supplements.

Did you know that you can help cleanse and wake up your body from the winter hibernating months with yoga?

I am introducing to you 3 yoga poses that will help your body transition from winter to spring that have a cleansing affect. They can easily be incorporated to your daily routine. Today’s pose is Dolphin Pose.

The health benefits of Dolphin Pose includes improved digestion, stress relief and a calmer mind, relieves symptoms of menopause, relieves menstrual discomfort, helps prevent osteoporosis, strengthens the upper body … just to name a few.  But how does it help with cleansing?

Because Dolphin Pose is an inversion it helps to drain the mucus from our sinuses and lungs that may have built up over the winter.  It helps get the lymph system moving, too, which could be a little sluggish from the winter hibernation.  Put it all together and this pose helps improve the immune system as well.  It’s a win/win!

One more thing. Spring cleaning and cleansing includes getting rid of things that no longer serve us.  In our homes it can be things like clothes, dishes, books, papers, etc.  In our bodies it is more like getting rid of toxins through changing our eating habits.  But what about emotionally and spiritually?

While you are on your mat, I encourage you to tune into yourself to discover emotional baggage that you can purge yourself of.  Take your time in your dolphin pose, take deep cleansing breaths, and notice what might come up.  Love yourself through it and be sure to jot it down in your journal.  Simply notice, do not judge!

Below is a quick video of yours truly practicing Dolphin Pose in the hallway of my little farmhouse apartment.  I'm definitely grateful for the size of this hallway, otherwise I would not have much space to practice.
